to create a way of learning that will help your kids live
extraordinary lives.
Potholes, Doubts
& Concerns in the Homeschool Road & How to Avoid Them
What
happens if your children won’t cooperate? What if you
don’t feel capable of teaching? What if you get burned
out? What if the curriculum you choose doesn’t work?
What if your husband and you don’t agree on what methodology
to use? What if the kids’ grandparents think homeschooling
is a bad idea? How do you juggle your time to do it all? What
if you don’t have money to spend on curriculum? What
if your children want to go back to school? What if nothing
you try works? In this interactive, Q&A-based presentation
we’ll expose these potholes and provide some strategies
on how to avoid them.

Am I An Unschooler? A Panel Discussion Labels
What does it mean to be an unschooler? Do I have to sign an unschooling manifesto? Self proclaimed unschoolers-or-something-like-that will lead a discussion on the down side of adhering to labels and giving up your autonomy. The practical advice in this session will get you thinking about homeschooling in ways that make both you and your kids happy without worrying too much about defining and sticking to one single methodology.
Whether you are a veteran homeschooler or just exploring the possibility
of homeschooling – one thing is certain: there are as many styles of homeschooling as there
are homeschoolers! How do you know which one is the “right” one for you and your family?
Do you have to choose just one style? What do you do if your style is different from your
child’s preferred style? Homeschooling offers us virtually limitless options – and with that
myriad of choices comes great responsibility, joy and excitement - along with endless
opportunities to second guess ourselves (especially when friends and family start to question us)!
So join us as we explore the question in the back of every homeschool parent’s mind – “Am I Doing This Right?”
Learn about the wide world of homeschool cooperatives.
There are as many types of co-ops as there are homeschooling options.
Some revolve around a group of families sharing responsibilities by taking turns
teaching/leading classes. Some are created by a group that wants to hire group tutors
for specific subjects. Delve into a few of the basic types in this session and explore your options and how to go about starting the type that works for you.
We will also discuss ideas for finding other families in your local area to participate.
Maia and Loren have been participating in co-ops for several years now, so they will also discuss sustaining a co-op -how to make it survive and thrive!
The methods of educating our young were established centuries ago and have
served to create a literate society. But today we all want more from education.
Every child has genius that can be tapped into through the right setting. With modern brain research,
scientists and educators have now revealed many ways of maximising individual students' brain potential
that go beyond traditional education.
Burning It Up not Burning Out

California Court 2008: Is Homeschooling STILL Legal?
The fast answer is YES! Many web news services and sites have been slow to update
their information on last year’s homeschool legal battle. Many people believe that homeschooling
has changed since March of 2008 and is no longer allowed. Join attorney Jerry Salcido, who helped
to represent CHN in the landmark California Court of Appeals case that threatened to homeschooling,
as we know it, in California. Mr. Salcido will discuss the threats to homeschooling that were presented
and will explain the outcome of the case. Knowing the facts will help you be able to answer for yourself
and other inquiring mind, with confidence, that homeschooling is definitely legal in California.
We will share information as well as personal perspectives on charter school independent study programs.
This roundtable will be hosted by charter school resource teacher Melody Elder and a panel of homeschoolers from varied
backgrounds who will share their perspectives: from the development of the charter school idea,
to what it looks like for families enrolled in a charter, to what it means to support homeschooling
families who attend a charter. Hear the upsides, the downsides, and share your own experiences.

Today's typical school curriculum flies in the face of everything
known about child development. Delaying academics does not mean delaying learning.
On the contrary, young children are sponges, sopping up information at warp speed.
This learning can actually be stunted by pushing worksheets and early reading on a child
whose vision, motor and perceptual development is not ready. Learn how children ages 4-10
can learn without standard curriculum materials, yet develop strong skills and strategies
to enhance later academic success. Carolyn, a former school teacher, rejected the state
approved timetable for learning as inappropriate, and instead used this approach with her
two grown daughters, both of whom hold Bachelor's Degrees. She is also a certified Learning Success Coach.

Gifted Homeschooling
101:
"If we're homeschooling, why does it matter if my child is
gifted?"
Gifted children come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. They may be
pleasantly advanced, or they may have more extreme learning
challenges. Come to this session to understand how giftedness impacts
education and social-emotional needs, and to gain a better
understanding of how your child's brain works. Bring your questions,
and we'll discuss the basics of gifted homeschooling and whatever
else you need to know about this unique population!
Grandparents who attend the Expo are very important,
and we want them to have a chance to get all of their homeschooling questions answered.
Typically, there are grandparents in this session who have strong doubts about homeschooling,
and there are also ones who are totally on board with it already,
but who attend because they want to talk to other grandparents and
learn more about how they can help. If you are the grandparent of a homeschooled child,
we invite you to attend! Your session presenter will be Martin Forte, an experienced
homeschooling dad, co-director of Excellence in Education private school satellite program,
purveyor of the EIE store in Monrovia, California and a grandparent himself!

In the race to give our children the 'best'
education we are inclined to discount the importance of unstructured
play. This is unfortunate. We are complex human beings, not
buckets to be filled with a large quantity of 'facts.' Play
is the work of children. They learn an amazing diversity of
concepts very easily through play. In addition, many academic
skills can be learned and reviewed to fluency through games
and play. Learn how to appreciate play and reap its benefits

Every child is different, yet we tend to think that all can learn from the same materials and methods. Then we wonder why some children thrive and learn, and others struggle. Learn how different 'learning dispositions,' modalities, talents, interests and environments work together to determine how we learn and retain information. This is especially useful for those who struggle with one or more academic areas, but everyone can benefit from more insight into the way we learn.

Homeschooling
In this session, we'll discuss specific issues and outcomes for
gifted homeschooling: How does non-traditional education prepares our

child be able to go to college or get a job? If my kids are never
bullied on the playground, will they be able to learn social skills
appropriate to adults? How do I deal with their gifted intensities in
addition to adolescent angst without going crazy? What resources are
available, and how can I adjust them to fit my individual child(ren)?

Using Games as a Compliment Learning
Our family loves games and our children were
allergic to workbooks. So, not being prone to swim upstream
we found or devised games for nearly everything. Games are
the fun way to drill. They get the job done in a fraction
of the time and with better results because children seldom
have to be coerced to play a game. When you enjoy what you
are doing, you learn many times faster than when it is just
a chore. Carolyn Forte of Excellence in Education presents
this fun workshop on incorporating games into your homeschool
curriculum.

The great liberal artist, Russell Kirk, said it well: "The primary purpose of a liberal (or leadership) education, then, is the cultivation of the person's own intellect and imagination, for the person's own sake. It ought not to be forgotten, in this mass-age when the state aspires to be all in all, that genuine education is something higher than an instrument of public policy. True education is meant to develop the individual human being, the person, rather than to serve the state..." Visit this speaker in the Vendor Hall -George Wythe College.
The Zen approach to homeschooling is not based on pat answers that
tell you "how to do it". Instead, it's an approach to being more awake by asking
questions and not getting in our own way. How can we make the most of right now?
How can we educate the best way possible? What is the true meaning of success?
There isn't always a clear answer, but in asking the questions, and choosing to
see the world with a loving, accepting, and dynamic perspective, we can learn more
about ourselves, our children, and our world.
This presentation will review the essential
role of art in developing right brain skills and in enabling
children to develop their full potential as students. It will

Reading by 9 Doesn't Work for Everyone: A Roundtable Discussion on Late Readers
We all know that each child is an individual.
Our children don’t all learn to walk or talk at the same age.
They aren’t all potty trained at the same age. Why do we believe they’ll all learn to read at the same age?

(Her son is now an avid reader and doing well in college!)

music appreciation in one. Do you love rock and roll? It’s easy to teach what you love!
This example can be used as a jumping off point for many different subjects.
Link popular music through the years and the current events that lived along side of them.
Sharpen your children’s critical thinking skills and discussion skills. We will talk
about how to work this subject for one child or a co-op group.

Homeschoolers have successfully incorporated PE, team sports
and individual sports into their routines. This panel will discuss the many different
types and ways to bring physical fitness and sports into your family life. Emphasis will

school and college level and organizations that can assist homeschoolers who aspire
to play team sports in college.
Teaching basic math is more than knowing how
to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Math skills are best
taught to the “image” and “relationship”
math side of the brain so teaching concepts with relationships
is more important than a lot of memorization. Subtraction
can be turned around to a different way of adding, so one set
of math facts does both jobs. Learn multiple ways to subtract
and divide for kids who struggle with math. Learn concrete
demonstrations for each skill: add, subtract, multiply, divide.
Learn which words and concepts in word problems clue you into
which process to use. This
session is part of Dorothy's 8 hour “Coaching Parent to Teach Math”
seminar covering K-7 math.
Teaching Mathematics with Art
(Or Teaching Art with Mathematics?)
Can your child’s future really be boiled down to something as simplistic as whether they are right-brained,
or left-brained? Surely, as homeschooling parents, we want our children to believe that they are capable of
using “both sides” of their brains. In this educational and entertaining workshop, we will explore the natural
and logical connections between Mathematics and Art. We will investigate mathematical principles,
and see how they are related to, and illustrated by, artistic applications. Likewise,
we will explore several artistic concepts, and see how they are based on mathematical ideas.
Of course, throughout, the importance of language and communication will be stressed, as it must play
a key role in the understanding of both areas.

Being The Best You Can Be Through A Healthy Diet
Irene Musiol will present a talk focused on how to use nutrition to support health and learning.
Irene Musiol is a member and Chapter Leader of the Weston A. Price nutrition foundation.
Weston A.Price Foundation was founded in 1999 to teach the nutritional principles of Weston A. Price
and to continue his research in nutrition. Weston A. Price travelled the world in the 1930's to study native peoples.
He found them to have far superior health than Americans and concluded that diet was the primary reason.
Through his studies, he developed the 11 principles of a healthy diet. In this talk we will discuss those principles
and how to apply them in our own lives to improve our families' health and assist our children in being the best that they can be.
Big Feelings: Understanding and Responding to Intense Feelings of Our
Children and Our Own!
Parenting is a life-long learning process of nurturing
our connection with our children. Parenting is “messy” business.
There is no “prescription” for dealing with the day-to-day challenges of raising children.
There are, however, basic communication tools that can assist parents in dealing positively
with challenges, while deepening the relationship between parent and child.
This workshop will address issues of communication between parent and child.
Although theory will be presented, the emphasis of the workshop will focus
on participants’ specific situations or concerns.
Budgets and Bargains -how
to gain and keep control of your finances
In this session, Bobbi will be speaking about Budgets & Bargains.
She will go over how to figure out your budget, then how to
keep it. She will also go over some basic bargain strategies
and where to look for more. Bobbi says she can put together
a budget where no one, not even the teens, feel the pain.

Celebrating Diversity with Young Children
This look and touch session will include displays
of materials to start the conversation when kids ask "What
is my culture?", "Why does that grandma look different?",
"What are biases?". Jennifer will share some of
her ideas on the diversity that makes up our world: race,
gender, age, social class, and abilities. Jennifer loves
books, so there will be plenty here to browse through that
reflect diversity and which are great for young children.
She will also share her own collection of materials as well
as ideas for manipulatives and blocks to have at home that
reflect diversity, from inexpensive art materials, science
and sensory materials, to dramatic play. You would be suprised
what you can find at the dollar store!
Communication Workshop: Parenting that Builds Relationships
How to support a lifetime of communication and connection through ALL the developmental stages.
An "adventure" is an unusual and exciting
experience, the opposite of inactivity and passiveness.
It is the best way to build teamwork. If homeschooling is
not adventurous, the family "team" descends into boredom
and rebelliousness. This session is about combining the
concept of adventure with homeschooling and your entire
family lifestyle. The three Severi girls have gone more
places and done more difficult things than most people do
in a lifetime. The direct results are three adolescents
with the "attitudes" of winning teammates, on top of the
love of a family that spends almost all day together.
Our choices --- from the food we buy, to the
way we clean our homes, to our transportation habits, to
the messages we teach our children --- have a significant
impact on our environment. What products and habits are
truly “greener”? (hint: They aren’t necessarily at the expensive
brand-name health food store!) Learn What We Can
Do about our environmental issues: how to integrate
earth-wiser choices into your family life, how to be greener
on a budget, and how you can prepare your children for a
brighter environmental future.

Team Schooling - 10 Tips for Parents and other Partners in Education
"Team Schooling". There are friends, spouses, local support groups and other family members
who assist the home educator every day. We often don't realize that these resources are available. The most
important team member is the spouse or parenting partner. These 10 tips can be applied to every family who homeschools.
Join Marc and Melissa as they share their own homeschooling journey and join in the discussion on what works (or doesn't work) in YOUR family.
Creating a High School
Transcript
Whether you unschool, school-at-home, or combine
elements of both, at some
point you will probably be called upon to issue a transcript
for your high
school graduate. This session will discuss what constitutes
a transcript,
what the common formats look like, how to categorize all
your student's
accomplishments, and how to transform them into courses,
grades, and
credits.
What I Wish I Had Known BEFORE the Kid’s
Were College Age (and helped me when I went back to college
with them!)
Learn the basics about planning for paying
for your child(ren)’s college education from a parent
who wishes she would have known this stuff LONG before her
own kids approached college age. She recently went back
to college herself and can share from both the perspective
of being the parent of 2 college students AND being a college
student herself.
From Homeschooler to
College Student: Successfully Transitioning Your Teen to College
When family and friends learn that your teen has started college,
they’ll assume you are no longer homeschooling. That may be true for schooled kids,
but for most homeschoolers, your job as homeschooling parent isn’t done yet.
Don’t stop homeschooling too soon – if your child is ready for college, there’s work to be done,
and the first year of college may be your busiest homeschool year of all!
In this session for parents, learn how to help your teen successfully adjust to college.
How to Get into a Private College
This session is designed to help homeschoolers and their parents think about what they want in an
undergraduate education and then identify specific tasks and approaches to achieve that objective.
Greg will discuss college planning, visits and interviews, standardized testing, transcripts,
teacher recommendations, essays and application questions, and financial aid. His emphasis will be
4-year undergraduate education at private colleges.
Success After Not High School
Wes has worked with hundreds of young people who have spent little or no time in a traditional high school
and have gone on to be successful in a wide variety of endeavors, ranging from professional rock climbing to medicine.
He will provide a number of students' stories along with general ideas about learning during the teen years on one's own
terms and then moving on to endeavors beyond "high school." He will explain how parents can do everything for their kids
that he does for his students.
Teaching the Timed Essay
College classes, SAT tests…does the prospect of writing timed essays
send you and your teen into a tailspin? Take heart! This workshop, geared to parents
of 8th-12th graders, discusses various types of essays and gives practical suggestions
for teaching this important writing skill. Gain tips on brainstorming, simple outlining,
and organization of a timed essay, and learn the secret to reducing the fear factor!

The Ups and Downs of Homeschooling Teens
There’s a myth circulating that if you homeschool
your teen, it will be like living in Lake Wobegon, where
all is wonderful, and the children are perfect. While that
might be your reality, it’s not a sure thing, and many homeschool
parents suffer in silence when their teen comes down with
teen angst or has other problems. You are not alone! Come
share problems and solutions in this encouraging session
for parents.

The Art and Joy
of Storytelling and Reading Aloud with Children
An Adult Workshop
Who doesn’t like to be read
to? And who better to read to children than the
people they love and trust most-their parents.
This workshop will teach parents to make the very
most of their precious read-aloud time with their
children. At the heart of each story he tells,
Jim Weiss’ renowned ability to make even
complex subjects comprehensible and memorable
to young children is evident. This delightful
and immediately useful workshop will help parents
to: become even better readers; more clearly define
their children’s listening skills; facilitate
the consideration of the freshness, outlook and
interpretation of the stories they choose to read;
and assist in using ones voice as an instrument
with rewarding and dramatic results.
The Loving Father:
The Why and How of Dads Telling Stories
An Adult Workshop
In an age in which children receive many competing, confusing
messages, stories are among the greatest and longest lasting
gifts that a father can give his child. Long before Jim Weiss
turned his passion for telling stories into a profession,
he told stories to his own child. A generation before that,
Jim and his brother listened to stories from their father
and grandfather.
The results: a lifelong love of reading; an unquenchable
thirst to learn; a passionate ability to listen, and a profound
sense of passing along the central beliefs of those who came
before us, in an entertaining, memorable form. In this timely
session meant especially for dads, Jim will share his own
experiences and demonstrate clear ways to transmit beliefs
and credos, and to show our children how much we love them
through the stories we share.
