MY STORY

Periodically we will be highlighting true stories of our members.  The thought behind this
feature is to remind you that real people with real lives homeschool.  We hope this
provides a sense of empowerment and excitement in relationship to your homeschool journey.

Back in the ’80’s my younger brother was social and emotional problems that were associated with being in school. My mom had never even heard of homeschooling, but she knew she had to get him out of a situation that could permanently damage him. She was afraid that homeschooling was illegal, but she risked it in order to give my brother what he needed.

My brother thrived in the home environment and soon he was back to being happy again. My mom saw the value in homeschooling and before long she was also homeschooling my two younger sisters as well. I had already graduated from high school by then.

My mom found a small group of like-minded homeschool friends with whom she formed a small support group. She hosted a “conference” in her home and invited me to it. I’m so glad I went. It was a light-bulb moment for me and that’s when I decided that I also want to homeschool.

For me, homeschooling means that my children are not learning from just one teacher, one textbook, but the whole world would serve as our curriculum. Not that we traveled, but that we can find learning anywhere.
Now I have homeschooled all four of my children, who are now ages 16-29. I’m so glad I made this decision for our family!

Our notes:  Most of you most likely have heard of Heather, especially with her love of Disneyland  and her program Celebration Education.  She has provided the homeschool community with not only a love for homeschooling, but a real sense of an out of the box approach.  Be sure to find Heather at EXPO this year, you will be glad you did.

Remember, it was a conference that made a big difference in her life.  See what an exciting difference EXPO2018 can make in your life.
