2018 CHN Family Expo’s
KEYNOTE SPEAKER

It seems that this year many homeschool conventions are following a more traditional
and formalized approach to homeschooling or are devoting a large amount of time to the
“box”.  Well, are you ready to get out of the “box” and start to feel the freedom and
exhilaration ofconnecting with your children and having some fun in the process?
If you are, then you will love our keynote speaker for EXPO2018.
Meet Roya Dedeaux, your answer to a more playful and less structured approach to
homeschooling.

Roya Dedeaux is a grown unschooler who lives in Southern California with her husband, two kids, and
assorted chickens and dogs.  Unlike many keynote speakers, Roya is an actual practicing
homeschool parent.  Can you imagine gaining insights from actual experience, not just
some untested theory or a big box curriculum company promoting a home school  agenda
directed to a learning style representing only about 20% of the population.

Roya has a M.S. in Counseling and a B.A. in Recreation and Leisure Studies. She is a Licensed Marriage and
Family Therapist, with a private practice in Los Alamitos, and long-distance counseling for homeschoolers.
Her therapy website is www.royadedeaux.com. She is also a professor in the Recreation and Leisure Department
at California State University, Long Beach, and loves getting to teach classes about play and leisure! She believes
strongly in the importance and power of play for all ages, and has spent the majority of her personal and
professional life inspiring others to become more playful.

Roya specializes in using art in her therapy practice, and has spent most of her life crocheting, knitting, making
journals, collaging, and following other artistic pursuits. She has a monthly yarn subscription business
(www.yarnofthemonth.com), sells earrings online (royaboya.etsy.com), is a regular columnist in The Homeschooler
magazine (http://www.hsc.org/magazine.html), and is the author of “Protect Their Passions” a workbook with
practical exercises to help work parents through emotional and logistical barriers to connecting more with their
children (www.royadedeaux.com).

Protect Their Passion – Part 1

Saturday September 8, 2018 9:00am – 10:00am
White Pines I & II

Play is necessary for cognitive, social, emotional, and physical well-being.  However many adults assimilated
messages during their own childhoods that remain unresolved, messages from their parents or teachers that play
is frivolous, unworthy, or unimportant.  PART ONE of this two-part talk will focus on the benefits of play for children
and adults and begin to delve into how you can increase your family’s well-being through valuing play in all of its
forms. (It’s OK if you can’t come to part two, come anyway).

Protect Their Passion – Part 2

Continues at 10:30am

PART TWO of this  two part talk will continue to discuss the importance of play, and go further in exploring your own
barriers to connecting with your children’s interests. We will dive into fears and emotional roadblocks, as well as
creative solutions to logistical problems that get in between you and your children connecting over their interests.
We will do “hands on” exercises that help you apply this exploration to your actual life and kids!  (It’s OK if you
miss part one, come anyway).

A Great Follow-Up Session to Consider

In the spirit of play and the importance of games emphasized in the delightful presentation above
you will love to hear the following speaker.

THE GAME CURRICULUM

Presented by Carolyn Forte

Saturday September 8, 2018 4:00pm – 5:00pm
White Pines I

Play enhances learning to an astonishing degree.  The late Dr. Karyn Purvis, Director of Texas Christian University’s
Child Development Center stated, “Scientists have recently determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to
create a new synapse in the brain – unless it is done with play, in which case, it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions!”

The Game Curriculum is a guide to using games and activities to stimulate and enhance learning at any age.  Come
learn how you can make games the core of your curriculum in the early years and a big part of your learning activities
even in the high school years.  The key is picking the right games for your children.
This session will give you guidelines and encouragement.

Carolyn is the Principal and owner of EIE Academy and Excellence In Education Resource Center.  She is also the developer
and author of the “The Game Curriculum”

Carolyn Forte is a session speaker; and you can visit her Excellence in Education booth in the Vendor Hall on Friday
and Saturday.
